SWEETWATER CREEK at SWEETWATER/BETHESDA COMMUNITY

Location:    Along Sweetwater Creek, a tributary of the Yellow River, between Lawrenceville Highway (Highway 29) and Ronald Reagon Parkway in Gwinnett County near Lawrenceville.  The tract is bisected by Omega Drive, entrance to Timbertop Subdivision.

Size:    Approximately 13 acres.

Donors:    Mr. Elbert Durden and Mr. David Hunt, owners since 1982. Donation received in late 1999.

Specifics:    The tract contains a mature, closed canopy pine and hardwood forest with herbaceous undergrowth in varying thickness.  A tributary of Sweetwater Creek rund through the center of the tract.  Toward the southeastern and southern boundaries of the tract like wetlands and marshy areas.  Overall, the site contains fertile bottom land and floodplains, along with upland areas.  Elevation ranges from 860 feet above sea level along the eastern border to 840 feed above sea level at Sweetwater Creek.

The forest includes pines estimated to be sixty to seventy years old, while hardwood specimens are estimated at fifty years of age or more.  The site is notable for its variety of trees -- a strong example of the sort of woods that naturally exist in Gwinnett County in riparian areas and associated uplands.  The forest is comprised of a normal and undisturbed balance of varieties of tree species including:

Northern red oak Tulip poplar (Yellow poplar)
White oak Sweet gum
Water oak Sycamore
Hickory River birch
Florida maple Box elder
Chalk maple Native red maple
American hornbeam (Blue beech) Old growth pine (Slash pine)
Eastern hop hornbeam

Wildlife:    Includes deer and raccoon.  Beavers were active in the interior of the site at one time, although samples of tree girdling are old.  Migrant birds such as great blue heron use the wetlands as a stopover.
