DROWNING CREEK

Location:    Spanning Drowning Creek, a tributary of the Apalachee River, between University Parkway (Highway 316) and Harbins Road within the city limits of Dacula in Gwinnett County.  The tract adjoins Brookton Place Subdivision.

Size:    Approximately 18.7 acres.

Donors:    Mr. Ray Gunnin and Mr. Leonard Hinton, partners in DAC Enterprises, Inc.  Mr. Gunnin served  on the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners from 1969 to 1979.  Mr. Hinton is a native of Gwinnett County.

Both men expressed their desire to see greenspace protected as a heritage to their community, and to encourage other landowners and developers to consider the value and importance of permanently conserving environmentally valuable land.

Specifics:    The tract contains a mature, closed canopy pine and hardwood forest with some herbaceous undergrowth.  Overall, the site contains bottom land and floodplain, along with upland areas.

A variety of trees -- primarily hardwoods -- occur that are typical of woodlands existing naturally in Gwinnett County in riparian areas and associated uplands.  The site contains a normal and undisturbed balance and variety of tree species.  Noteworthy among the trees on the tract are a number of wild big leaf magnolias.

Several oak varieties Tulip poplar (Yellow poplar)
Several maple varieties Sweet gum
Big leaf magnolia Sycamore

The site is home to wildlife, including deer and raccoon.
