DROWNING CREEK
Location: Spanning Drowning Creek, a tributary
of the Apalachee River, between University Parkway (Highway 316) and
Harbins Road within the city limits of Dacula in Gwinnett County.
The tract adjoins Brookton Place Subdivision.
Size: Approximately 18.7 acres.
Donors: Mr. Ray Gunnin and Mr. Leonard Hinton,
partners in DAC Enterprises, Inc. Mr. Gunnin served on the
Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners from 1969 to 1979. Mr. Hinton
is a native of Gwinnett County.
Both men expressed their desire to see greenspace protected as a
heritage to their community, and to encourage other landowners and
developers to consider the value and importance of permanently conserving
environmentally valuable land.
Specifics: The tract contains a mature, closed
canopy pine and hardwood forest with some herbaceous undergrowth.
Overall, the site contains bottom land and floodplain, along with upland
areas.
A variety of trees -- primarily hardwoods -- occur that are typical of
woodlands existing naturally in Gwinnett County in riparian areas and
associated uplands. The site contains a normal and undisturbed
balance and variety of tree species. Noteworthy among the trees on
the tract are a number of wild big leaf magnolias.
